For many locals, this stretch of shophouses is synonymous with tau sar piah, a flaky pastry filled with bean paste. Traditionally, only two flavours existed: sweet and savoury, the latter distinguished by a sprinkling of sesame seeds on the dough.
Loong Fatt Eating House & Confectionery, reputedly the first to sell tau sar piah on this road in the 1970s, is perhaps the most established shop here. A later arrival, the House of Tau Sar Piah, was founded by a baker who relocated his business to Balestier Road in 1984.
