Hariyo Craft (Green & Sustainable): Why It Matters

Local sustainable products are a source of livelihood for a large part of the ethnic communities in Nepal. However, easily available alternatives has created a dip in its popularity. 

Traditional crafts are not only unique in their look but also sustainable as it is made with locally available materials such as tree bark, hay, and corn husk. In addition, it engages the whole community in the production process from collecting the raw materials to the creation of the final product. Despite their significance, these products are challenged by alternative modern products that hold a strong sway over the market and the current generation at large.

Have Fun Creating Your Own Hariyo Art Piece

We invite guests to experience the making of crafts using sustainable products, learn & experience firsthand the importance of this art form in supporting economical and environmental ecosystem.

Guests can join the traditional craft experts at Nepal Knotcraft Center and participate in a 1.5-hour interactive craft-making session where they will learn how to turn locally available, natural raw materials into a craft. Guests will also learn under the same roof, the unique craft making styles, representing different ethnic groups of Nepal.

Guests have a hands-on experience of this art form which also spotlight the need for working with traditional & sustainable products that reduce carbon footprints and help towards building a greener and brighter future.

Guests will walk away with newfound knowledge and appreciation about traditional and sustainable products, by knowing the profound impact a simple, daily use product can have on our environment and community. They will also help support an initiative that preserves the age-old craft of the ethnic communities of Nepal, by encouraging the women of each community to contribute and build with pride on a centuries old skill that has stood the test of time and holds immense relevance in today’s age. Women empowerment is also supported and encouraged, as the Centre employs women of  different ethnic communities in Nepal, helping them with a livelihood and the opportunity to contribute towards building a better tomorrow for themselves and the world at large.
