1962: Designed by famous architect Morris Lapidus, the historic Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel opened as the Loews Americana. Its 53-story structural dip design allowed guests to have better views of the city from their rooms, and it became NYC’s tallest concrete frame building. The first grand-scale modern hotel in Midtown Manhattan, the Americana featured 1,850 rooms, 50 floors, five restaurants, 10 ballrooms and a parking garage for 350 cars. The hotel’s most popular restaurant and jazz club – The Royal Box – was a hotspot for legendary performers, such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee.

1964 – 1965: The New York World’s Fair was held in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens and showcased the best American culture and technology of the time. The event brought hundreds of guests to the hotel over the span of two years.

1967 & 1968: The Americana Hotel joined partner hotels in California to host the Emmy® Awards.

1968: John and Paul from the beloved classic English rock band The Beatles launched the firm Apple at the Americana Hotel. They also played several performances at The Royal Box in their early years.

1972: Scenes from the 1972 motion picture “The Godfather” were filmed at the Americana.
American Airlines took over the hotel, running the property for the next six and a half years under its original name.

1976: The Democratic National Convention was held in our Imperial Ballroom conference room.

1979: In January, the Sheraton Corporation acquired the hotel and renamed it Sheraton Center Hotel & Towers, making it the largest hotel in the entire Sheraton Brand at the time.

1988: Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli attended a benefit at the Sheraton Centre honoring Michael Jackson and his contributions to the United Negro College Fund.

1990: The historic property underwent a multi-million dollar renovation positioning it as the city’s premiere meeting and business traveler hotel.

1992: The Sheraton Center Hotel & Towers underwent a $192 million renovation and became the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers.

1998: Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. acquired the Sheraton Brand, and the Sheraton Center Hotel & Towers joined the Starwood family.

2011 – 2012: Completed in February 2012, our $180 million renovation included a full redesign and expansion of all 1,781 guest rooms, 206 club-level rooms and 31 suites. These spacious accommodations are now larger and feature upgraded in-room amenities, such as new 37” flat-screen HDTVs with OnDemand movies, plush Sheraton Signature Beds, Starbucks™ one-cup coffee makers, refreshed bathrooms with new fixtures, and free USA Today weekday newspapers.
