Guests will certainly want to visit Sunnyside, Washington Irving’s home, with tours led by guides dressed in period costume (visiting families with kids will receive a tote containing games, a picture book and dominoes). Real literary buffs can then follow the route Ichabod Crane took when he was running from the Headless Horseman. This journey will take you from Sunnyside through Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow, where you can visit Irving’s gravesite at the Old Dutch Church.
Before retiring to your room, you might also take in Lyndhurst, a Gothic-styled mansion overlooking the Hudson River with 67 acres of land, including many gardens and hiking trails. Visitors can take tours of this National Trust Historic Site, and enjoy events such as an arts and crafts show.
Tarrytown hotels also give you excellent access to cultural venues such as the Tarrytown Music Hall. Built in 1885, it’s one of the oldest theaters in the United States. Although the hall closed in 1976 due to budget constraints, it was successfully reopened by a nonprofit organization in 1980, and now stages everything from classic films to concerts.
