The first stop for guests at our hotels is the York Minister, one of the world’s most splendid Gothic cathedrals, built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Next, take a walk along the medieval walls of this once-entirely walled city. The Yorkshire Museum, considered one of England’s finest, is another must-see attraction, as is the York Castle Museum, a recreated medieval street. Your history fix doesn’t stop there: visit Shambles, Europe’s oldest (and some say most charming) shopping street, for an afternoon tea in a quaint café or tearoom.
Local dining is anything but old fashioned. You can choose from cuisine ranging from Indian to Spanish to traditional English. And make sure to stop at a local pub to soak in the atmosphere—as well as a plate of Yorkshire pudding—before returning to your nearby York accommodations.
Don’t stop at the city limits, though. Just beyond our York hotels awaits “God’s Own Country,” the well-chosen nickname of the Yorkshire countryside. Be on the lookout for a local town’s Long Sword dancing team or one of many folk music festivals.
