Biodigester: The biodigester used at the hotel transforms 150 kg of organic waste daily into biodegradable liquid, which is then directed to the sewage system with no environmental impact. Once the waste enters the chamber, it is decomposed by microorganisms, converting it into this liquid and significantly reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills. The Engineering Department’s current project aims to implement a biodigester capable of processing 600 kg of organic waste daily.
Recycling: The property's recycling system partners with the company Light Recicla, which converts the amount of recycled waste into discounts on the electricity bills of two supported institutions: the NGO SER Alzira de Aleluia and the Vivendas da Fé Institution. Additionally, we have a dedicated Recycling Associate, hired specifically to manage all recycling activities.
Reused Water: The hotel’s laundry facility utilizes a reuse station, ensuring all water used in washing is recycled. This process allows approximately 80,000 liters of water to be reused daily.
Cage-free Eggs: Our eggs come from cage-free hens, an alternative that promotes animal welfare and enhances the sustainability of egg production.
Local Producers: All our delicate greens, sprouts, and baby vegetables are sourced from a local producer called Orgânicos da Fátima.
Clean Energy: The Sheraton Grand Rio operates within a Free Energy Market, enabling us to source Incentivized Energy — a specific type of electricity that receives benefits due to its origin, generation source, or geographic location. These incentives, provided by the government or regulatory entities, aim to promote environmentally sustainable energy practices. At the hotel, 100% of the energy consumed comes from clean sources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric power.
Electric Cars: The hotel now offers two ReCar electric charging stations.
4R Glass Machine: This equipment crushes glass bottles into small, safe shards that can be easily recycled. It reduces the frequency of waste collection and eliminates the need to store large quantities of empty bottles. By crushing glass bottles on-site, the 4R Glass Machine minimizes the volume of waste transported, contributing to reduced carbon emissions associated with waste transportation.
